Are you interested in studying a counselling courses?

Distance learning and a range of different courses make our qualifications accessible to everyone. This qualification will help develop your knowledge and skills around counselling by looking at counselling theories, key elements of the main theoretical approaches and will help you to develop self-understanding and reflect on your own values and beliefs. Successfully completing this qualification will help enable you to provide support and help to others.

Upon successful completion of both unit assessments you will be awarded the Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills.

Please note:

  • If you choose to study the fully paper-based course, you will need to have an appropriate witness available to complete a witness statement for you as part of the Unit 1 assessment
  • If you choose to study the paper-based course with online assessments, you will need to either film yourself demonstrating particular skills, or have an appropriate witness available to complete a witness statement for you as part of the Unit 1 assessment

*The witness must hold a qualification in counselling skills and The Skills Network may contact the witness to validate their qualifications and experience.

Unit 1: Using counselling skills
In this unit, you will identify core counselling skills and understand how these are practised in a counselling relationship. Throughout this unit, you will gain an understanding of how to establish an effective working relationship and will consider the boundaries that need to be respected in this sensitive role.
This unit contains four sections, including:
• Section 1: Core counselling skills
• Section 2: Establishing a helping relationship
• Section 3: Using core counselling skills in a helping relationship
• Section 4: Concluding a helping interaction.


Unit 2: Introduction to counselling skills theories
This unit introduces you to the key elements of the main theoretical approaches in counselling, psychodynamics, person-centred therapy and cognitive-behavioural therapy.
There are key practical differences between these theories, and you will enhance your skills in understanding the significance of counselling theory.
This unit contains two sections, including:
• Section 1: Counselling theories
• Section 2: The significance of counselling theory.


Unit 3: Diversity and ethics in the use of counselling skills
This unit covers the concepts of diversity and ethics. You will gain an understanding of anti-discriminatory practice, discover the key aspects of an ethical framework and find out various ways to address diversity in counselling skills practice.
This unit contains three sections, including:
• Section 1: Using an ethical framework for counselling skills
• Section 2: The meaning of discrimination
• Section 3: Anti-discriminatory practice.


Unit 4: Counselling skills and personal development
This unit allows you to develop self-understanding by identifying your own values and beliefs, and to develop the ability to reflect on your personal qualities and skills. Potential future areas of development for each learner are also explored within this section.
This unit contains four sections, including:
• Section 1: Developing self-understanding
• Section 2: Personal qualities relevant for helping roles
• Section 3: Meeting your own support needs
• Section 4: Using self-reflection for personal development
