Course information:

Are you looking to complete some child care training? Courses from The Skills Network are perfect for individuals who wish to study and gain new skills, but who don’t wish to do so in a classroom environment. Available via distance learning, this qualification will give you an introductory understanding of childcare through exploring young children’s development, the value and importance of play, how to plan a healthy diet and the importance of safeguarding and welfare.

This course offers paper based learning materials and paper based assessments.

Unit 1: Young children’s development
This unit will enable you to understand the stages of development of young children from birth to three years, alongside exploring how positive environments support the development of young children.
This unit contains three sections, including:
• Section 1: The stages of development of young children from birth to three years
• Section 2: How positive environments support the development of young children
• Section 3: How to support young children’s development by providing for their basic needs.


Unit 2: The value of play to young children
This unit will allow you to understand the necessity of play to young children’s development, as well as demonstrating different play activities suitable for young children from birth to five years and 11 months.
This unit contains three sections, including:
• Section 1: The value of play for young children’s development
• Section 2: Different play activities suitable for young children from birth to five years and 11 months
• Section 3: The role of the adult in providing play for young children.


Unit 3: Importance of play for early learning
This unit will help you to understand the vital importance of creativity and imagination in the development of a child. The unit will provide knowledge of how to organise a cooking activity for children and understand the important role of creative activities in enhancing children’s learning and development, as well as the importance of books and stories. Furthermore, it will help you understand the importance of talking and listening activities.
This unit contains six sections, including:
• Section 1: The importance of creativity and imagination for the development of a child
• Section 2: The role and importance of games with rules in the development of a child
• Section 3: How to organise a cooking activity for children
• Section 4: The role of creative activities in enhancing children’s learning and development
• Section 5: The importance of books and stories in relation to children’s learning and development
• Section 6: The importance of talking and listening activities in relation to children’s learning and development.


Unit 4: Safeguarding the welfare of children and young people
This unit will examine legislation, guidelines, policies and procedures for safeguarding the welfare of children and young people, including e-safety. It will also explain what action to take when children or young people are injured or ill, highlighting emergency procedures, as well as how to respond to suspicions that a child or young person has been abused, harmed or bullied.
This unit contains three sections, including:
• Section 1: The legislation, guidelines, policies and procedures for safeguarding the welfare of children and young people, including e-safety
• Section 2: Know what to do when children or young people are ill or injured, including emergency procedures
• Section 3: Know how to respond to evidence or concerns that a child or young person has been abused, harmed or bullied.


Unit 5: Use food and nutrition information to plan a healthy diet
Building an understanding of making good food and nutritional choices for children is at the core of this unit. You will develop skills in understanding food labelling and what to look out for to ensure that children are given a nutritious, balanced diet.
This unit contains three sections, including:
• Section 1: Food labelling
• Section 2: Food additives
• Section 3: Principles of healthy eating.
