Course information:

This qualification aims to equip you with a strong understanding of common childhood illnesses, including how to provide a safe and healthy environment for babies and young children, how to recognise when a baby or child is unwell, and how to manage acute and chronic health conditions in an early years setting.

This course offers paper based learning materials with paper based assessment.

Unit 1: How to provide a safe and healthy environment for babies and young children
In this unit, you will gain an understanding of the policies and procedures that are designed to maintain a healthy and safe environment for babies and young children, including how to minimise the spread of infection and cross-infection.
This unit contains four sections, including:
• Section 1: How infection is spread
• Section 2: Ways to minimise cross-infection when working with babies and young children
• Section 3: The role of policies and procedures to maintain a safe and healthy environment for babies and young children
• Section 4: The role of healthy initiatives when working with babies, young children and families.


Unit 2: Common childhood illnesses
You will learn how to recognise when a baby or young child is unwell by learning about the specific signs and symptoms of common childhood illnesses such as Rubella, Chicken pox, Ringworm and Tonsillitis. You will also learn about how to care for an unwell baby or child and policies and procedures relating to this.
This unit contains three sections, including:
• Section 1: How to recognise when a baby or young child is unwell
• Section 2: How to support and care for a baby or young child who is unwell in the early years setting
• Section 3: The policies and procedures relating to the care of babies and young children who are unwell in an early years setting.


Unit 3: Health emergencies and specific health conditions in an early years setting
In this unit, you will develop an understanding of health emergencies that may take place in an early years setting, including accidents that may occur, and serious illnesses that could develop in babies and young children, as well as managing acute and chronic health conditions and food allergies.
This unit contains four sections, including:
• Section 1: Accidents that may occur in an early years setting
• Section 2: Serious illness in babies and young children
• Section 3: Management of acute and chronic health conditions in an early years setting
• Section 4: Allergies and food intolerance.
