It is always gratifying when an FBU member can benefit from our courses to help them understand conditions affecting a family member, especially a son or daughter, so when London Firefighter Terry Brown contacted us to study the Understanding Autism course we were very keen to enable him to enrol onto this course.
Terry is based at Tottenham Fire Station and he attended the induction session in November 2016 to enrol onto the Understanding Autism Level 2 course. Terry stated that "the enrolment took place at Brigade Headquarters where I was given all the resources needed and agreed dates with Project Support Organiser Tim Davis for my 3 assessments. i was also given access to the support provided by the FBU Learning Centre and course tutors. The course is delivered so I can work at my own pace and in my own environment and this was important for me. I completed 3 assessments and was given a month to complete each one which was a good timescale for me to work with."
Terry completed his chosen course by March 2017 and has since been presented with his Level 2 Certificate (see above). All of our Distance Learning courses are fully accredited by the National Awarding Body NCFE.
There was a very good reason for Terry studying this particular course as he explained to us "I have an autistic son and wanted a better understanding and new startegies to help him. This course not only provided me with a better understanding and new strategies but has also gained me a Level 2 Qualification which is valued in education and Care Services if I decide to take a new career path when I retire."
Terry has now enrolled onto another of our Level 2 courses, Working with People with Learning Disabilities, and he has stated that "The FBU are running many different courses and I would highly recommend studying one of the courses supplied by the FBU."
Thank you Terry and good luck with your current course.
