The home page for the FBU region 8 Wales is where you can access the latest details on news of learning and development opportunities for members and who to contact for further information and support.
The region was successful in a bid for further funding from the Welsh Government provided and administered via the Wales Union Learning Fund. The new project “The Learning Ladder” commenced on 1st April 2016 and will run until 31st March 2018.
The first step for the project was to be able to advertise and seek expressions of interest from members and other employees in respect of the distance learning courses that we can offer via out FBU National Learning Centre. The result of this exercise saw a greatly increased number of enquiries and over seventy individuals enrolling on courses.
The next steps include establishing a programme of workshops that will be delivered in all three of the fire and rescue services during the autumn months of 2016 – details will be posted on this site via the courses and news sections.
There are also other challenges facing the project which will also include working with employers to discuss the possible delivery of exercise and fitness qualifications here in Wales, in light of the collaborative initiative launched in England between the FBU and employers which offers a level three apprenticeship qualification. In Wales we are not currently able to follow this practice due to the differing funding arrangements that prevail but we are exploring the funding arrangements that are in place to see if they present any opportunities to provide qualifications that would be of interest and benefit to members.
We will also be seeking the views of members on their learning interests for the future so that we are better informed and can seek to tailor our response accordingly.
The project will continue to disseminate information throughout the three fire and rescue services by as wide and as varied methods and channels as possible and I hope that you will find something of interest with which you will want to join in.
